Aaniin,
My name is Amanda Sayers, I am a Mississauga First Nation band member and grew up in Iron Bridge, ON. I recently accepted employment with Mississauga First Nation as the Chi-Naakinagewin Coordinator. In relief of Laura Mayer, who is on maternity leave, I am quite excited to start this position, be back in the community and to be part of this truly amazing policy development work. I look forward to taking on the responsibilities and challenges that go with being a policy researcher for the community, both within the community and outside.
To give you a sense of my previous accomplishments, I attended Sault College for Native Specialization and Social Work. At Algoma University, I majored in Sociology. In previous work, I was positioned at the Indian Friendship Centre as an at-risk youth worker in Red Lake, ON. I also worked with high-risk youth in Sault Ste. Marie, ON with the friendship centre.
My passion is based in social services. Specifically, helping First Nations communities and young families early on when they are establishing their careers. Being a representative/advocate for our families and children helps give them a voice so they are heard and that we can support them.
I feel like this position for me will help strengthen my knowledge, understanding and ideas for how to make these issues more visible and develop support systems that can be developed more practically and efficiently.
I hope everyone is well and that you’re all staying safe while the COVID-19 pandemic continues to make us find new ways to work collaboratively and effectively. Remember to take care of yourself, your family’s well-being and mental health through this trying time.
If you’d like to reach out and learn more about my new role, I can be contacted at amandasayers@mississaugi.com
