Chief & Council

2023-2026 Term

Welcome to the Chief and Council page of Mississauga First Nation. Here you will find information about the current leadership elected to serve our community for the present term. Guided by our Anishinaabe values, traditions, and the Misswezahging Constitution, Chief and Council are entrusted with the responsibility of governing in a way that reflects the collective vision of our people. Together, they work to uphold transparency, advance community priorities, protect our rights, and strengthen the well-being of all Mississauga First Nation members—both on and off-reserve. We invite you to learn more about their roles, responsibilities, and ongoing efforts to support our Nation’s growth and sovereignty.

Roles and Responsibilities

Chief

The Chief of Mississauga First Nation serves as the primary political leader and spokesperson for the community, embodying the vision and values of the Nation in all external and internal matters. As outlined in the Governance Manual, the Chief provides leadership by guiding the overall direction of Chief and Council, chairing Council meetings, and working collaboratively with the Director of Operations to ensure the effective administration of programs and services. The Chief also plays a key role in setting Council agendas, overseeing governance procedures, and representing the interests of Mississauga First Nation at regional, national, and international forums. Upholding Anishinaabe values, the Chief ensures that decisions reflect the community’s traditions, uphold transparency, and promote accountability. Through this leadership, the Chief supports strategic planning, good governance, and the protection of inherent and treaty rights in accordance with the Misswezahging Constitution and the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Councilor

A Councillor of Mississauga First Nation plays a vital role in the governance and wellbeing of the community by supporting the leadership and strategic direction established by Chief and Council. As described in the Governance Manual, Councillors are responsible for participating in Council meetings, contributing to collective decision-making, and representing the interests and concerns of community members. Each Councillor may be assigned specific portfolios or areas of responsibility—such as health, education, lands, or youth—and is expected to stay informed and engaged in those sectors to advocate effectively on behalf of the community. Councillors are also expected to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct, maintain confidentiality, avoid conflicts of interest, and adhere to the Code of Conduct and Oath of Office. Through these responsibilities, Councillors help ensure accountable, transparent, and culturally grounded governance that aligns with the values of the Anishinaabe people and the Misswezahging Constitution.
