Land and Resources

Land and Resources Department Overview

The Lands and Natural Resources Department plays a vital role in supporting sustainable Development, Land Stewardship, and Resource Management within Mississauga First Nation Lands and Traditional Lands and administering our ratified Land Code for Lands Management.

Our department is made up of a dedicated team that works closely together. We currently have 9 team members, and our team continues to grow.

 

The Lands and Resources Department is responsible for a wide range of areas, including Environmental Protection, Land and Water oversight, Air Quality, Policy and Law Development, Monitoring and Research, and collaboration with NGOs, local agencies, municipalities, First Nation organizations, and Tribal Councils.

The Mississauga First Nation Lands and Resources Department remains committed to advancing land stewardship through land-based learning, cultural values, historical knowledge and Economic assistance and advice by engaging in Renewable Energy Projects, Forestry, Mining and Aggregates.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Land and Resources Director
 

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Lands and Natural Resources Director will plan, develop, co-ordinate, monitor and evaluate all aspects of the locally delivered lands and natural resources services and programs within the Mississauga First Nation.

The Lands and Natural Resources Director ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services to the community by developing, interpreting, and implementing the Forest Management Plan, Land Code (Plan), Land Use Management Plan, fish and wildlife programs or projects.

Land and Resources Technician
 

The purpose of the Lands and Resources Technician position is to ensure that the natural resources within Mississauga First Nation are managed wisely and prudently for the next seven generations.

 

The Lands and Resources Technician will assist the Lands & Resources Department in multiple facets by providing experience, technical skills/assistance and knowledge into the Lands & Resources operations including the broader spectrum of patrolling and monitoring of Mississauga First Nation and Mississauga First Nation Trust Lands including the enforcement of Mississauga First Nation’s Dog-bylaw and Waste Disposal Law and technical assistance and guidance in purchasing lands.

Data Management Technician
 

Under the direction of the Lands and Resources Manager and, the Data Management Technician will provide technical expertise in Geographic Information System (GIS) and Data Management support services (i.e., data entry, editing, manipulation and quality control), information product generation (including maps, queries, geo-processing, tabular summaries, and reports), to Mississauga First Nation.

 

This will also include technical fieldwork associated with Lands, Resources and Community Infrastructure Management.

Emergency Management Coordinator
 

To coordinate a comprehensive Emergency Management program for MFN. The incumbent will participate in, coordinate, or lead the prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery aspects of emergencies for which MFN has lead responsibility.

 

To participate in planning and preparation related to business continuity and building/facility security. To participate in the development of MFN program consistent with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Joint Health and Safety Committee. 

 

To work as an MFN Emergency Liaison with other federal/ provincial agencies, Municipalities and First Nations.

The Lands and Resources Manager will under direction ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services to the community by assisting and developing, interpreting, and implementing the Forest Management Plan, Land Code (Plan) Lands Administration, Land Use Management Plan, fish and wildlife programs or projects in Environment, Economic development joint ventures and assisting with Renewable Energy engagement strategies.

Land and Resources Environmental Technician
 

The Lands and Resources Environmental Technician is responsible for the development and implementation of an approved Environmental Monitoring Plan.

 

The Lands and Resources Environmental Technician will monitor the environmental impacts of human and industrial activities on Mississauga First Nation land.

 

This position will conduct environmental screenings for new project development, assess the use of Natural Resources, monitor and collect samples, analyze data, gather Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge (ATK), develop policies, conduct research and compile reports.

 

This position works within all pertinent Mississauga First Nation, federal and provincial legislation, regulations and guidelines.

Indigenous Liaison for Engagement and Environmental Protection
 

Canada’s nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, is funding this position through its Indigenous and Stakeholder Capacity Fund to help Indigenous Nations and communities gain the capacity necessary to engage in the CNSC's regulatory processes prior to and throughout the lifecycle of nuclear facilities and activities in Canada in a variety of ways.

Project Engagement Coordinator
 

Hydro One wishes to build a positive trust-based relationship with the First Nation and is committed to developing a collaborative working relationship with the First Nation and engaging with the First Nation in support of Hydro One’s Projects in the First Nation’s Traditional Territory.

 

Hydro One is proposing to advance preliminary discussions with Mississauga First Nation with respect to the following proposed projects situated within Mississauga First Nation’s traditional territory: Mississaugi TS to Hanmer TS 500 kV Transmission Line and Mississaugi TS to Third Line TS 230 kV Transmission Line]

Lands and Resources Membership Registry Clerk
 

To develop, implement and coordinate effective office administrative procedures for implementation of the Land and Membership Codes.

 

To ensure compliance with the Land and Membership Code, Mississauga First Nation policies and procedures and any applicable federal and provincial legislation, regulations and guidelines
