Health Services

The unit is made up of the health department which covers primacy care to the community with the partnership of visiting services, health promotions and mental health supports.

The Health Services department maintains a standard of community member’s privacy and trust. All regulated health professionals are licensed by their respective regulating bodies and bound by the Regulated Health Professions Act which clearly defines confidentially around client information and record keeping/client charts. All other Health Services employees are bound by a signed Oath of Confidentiality.

Roles and Responsibilities

Health Services Director

To manage the coordination and delivery of efficient programs and services of the Health Unit through a trauma informed perspective. To promote the mission and vision of the Health Unit and continuously evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services. To manage the financial resources, human resources and programs and services of the Unit. The Health Services Director shall continuously strive to improve operations, streamline work processes and work collaboratively with other departments to provide quality services to its membership.

Health Services Manager

The Health Services Manager will be to ensure Mississauga First Nation socially driven programs and services meet the community needs in a planned and coordinated manner.  The Health Services Manager will assist in the supervision of service staff through established accountability mechanisms of the Health Services.

Community Health Nurse

The Community Health Nurse will implement a comprehensive health program to the community members of Mississauga First Nation by working directly with the Community Health Representative – health Promotions and Health prevention activities.  Increase community members motivation to act on factors which determine or influence their health. The Community Health Nurse will be responsible for enabling individuals to increase control over and self- management of their health, thus promoting optimal health for all.

To support the health and well-being of Mississauga First Nation by providing access to health care such as:

  • Immunizations through the lifespan

  • Health assessments (head to toe)

  • Blood pressure monitoring

  • Blood work

  • Well baby assessments

  • Point of care testing (blood glucose, COVID, pregnancy, strep A)

  • Referrals

Community Health Representative - Health Promotions

Promote healthy and holistic lifestyle choices to the members and residents of Mississauga First Nation in order to reduce the incidence of disease.  The Community Health Representative (CHR) services are designed to improve or increase control, thus providing optimal health for all.  The CHR will promote substance free activities and events for various age groups.

Health Educator

The Health Educator will work collaboratively to engage children, youth, adults and elders in the promotion of wholistic health, protection of health and prevention of disease. The Health Educator is to promote and enable individuals to increase control over their health and optimize their wellbeing. They will work collectively with frontline Health Services and Social Services staff and programs to support with educational programing. With guidance from the Community Health Nurse, the Health Educator will provide support to the frontline healthcare professionals within a clinical setting.

Community Activator

 The Community Activator will coordinate the delivery of recreation programs and services and to help assist in the operations of the Sports Complex of Mississauga First Nation. This position will be responsible for the membership enrollment and room rental of the Sports Complex. The Community Activator will provide weekly programming targeted to building the health and wellness programming to the community at large.

Health Services Administrative Assistant

The Administrative Assistant is to provide secretarial support to the various positions within the Health Services Department. In the absence of the Director and both Managers, the Administrative Assistant will provide supervision and support to the Health Services Department as per the Delegation of Authority Chart.

Medical Transportation Coordinator

The Medical Transportation Coordinator will coordinate services for clients and ensure appropriate and necessary medical transportation policies and procedures are administered and adhered to accordingly.

Medical Transportation Driver

The purpose of the Medical Transportation Driver is to ensure passengers travel in a safe vehicle to scheduled medical appointments. The MTD will ensure the vehicle is maintained with regular service and that it is in proper working condition at all times.

Mental Health Counsellor

The Mental Health Counsellor is to provide support to employees, community members and their families.  The Counsellor will meet with clients as needed.  The Counsellor will encourage clients to discuss what is happening in their lives and help them gain insight into themselves or their relationships. Since counselling requires confidentiality, the counsellor may meet with clients in a location not associated with the band office and at a time that is negotiable between counselor and client. The Counsellor is to provide support to Mississauga Band Members.  He/she is expected to establish a working relationship with various healthcare agencies and community services to achieve the desired outcomes.  

Mental Health Family Counsellor

The Mental Health Family Counsellor is to provide clinical assessment, counselling, case management, support and education to children, youth, adults, and families including referral services to individuals and primary prevention activities to the community of Mississauga First Nation. The Counsellor will be responsible for creating accurate and detailed records and case notes as well as develop and maintain sustainable relationships with other professionals in the communities. Since counselling requires confidentiality, the counsellor may meet with clients in a location not associated with the band office and at a time that is negotiable between counselor and client.

Drug & Alcohol Addictions Worker

The Drug & Alcohol Addictions worker provides single session addictions counselling services including assessment, treatment and referral for individuals, couples and families in crisis and/or experiencing drug and/or alcohol addiction issues. They provide referrals to additional resources and collateral collaboration for clients, as required. The worker assists clients in accessing available resources that are needed to reach their health care and addictions recovery related goals. Be committed to the development of an effective working relationship with First Nations, government agencies and organizations who are networking with Mississauga First Nation.

Community Wellness Worker

The Community Wellness and Cultural Coordinator will be responsible to provide holistic, culturally appropriate mental health and addiction referral services to residents of the Mississauga First Nation.  In addition, they will develop, deliver and implement cultural programming.  The coordinator will endeavor to engage the community and staff utilizing educational materials and promotion of cultural activities.  The activities will be intended to maintain community interest and involvement in a wide variety of cultural events to instill and strengthen cultural awareness, identity, pride and foster community spirit. The worker will act as the lead to the Crisis Response Team and participate with the entire Health Services Team on issues related to community crisis, mental health and addictions support and referral.

Home & Community Care Program

The Home & Community care program provides Services such as Meals on Wheels, Homemaking Services, Personal Support Services, Occupational Therapy weekly, Physiotherapy weekly, Maintenance, Adult Day Service/activities at Red Pine, Transportation and Respite Care/palliative care. There are eligibility requirements that must be met in order to qualify for services, through an intake and assessment process- this is the Inter RAI CHA assessment.

Chiropodist

Provide service: Chiropody/Foot Care Services as per Diabetic Program specifications for clinical foot care services and Infection Prevention. Services provided within the Mississauga First Nation Health Centre, and Red Pine Lodge. Foot Care education to be provided to clients.

Mississauga First Nation Crisis Response Team

Mississauga First Nation Crisis Response Team is a program that consists of community volunteers assisting emergency services to meet the short-term practical and emotional needs of community members of tragic circumstances and their longer-term needs by referral to existing community agencies.

Visiting Services Maamwesying

Primary Care team includes health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance. Clients are considered a partner in their own health and play an important role in the care plan, which enables them to be the best that he or she can be. Staff monitor chronic illness, as well as see people on an urgent basis for episodic illness. Referrals are made to specialists by the physicians and the nurse practitioners if required. The primary care team works directly in the First Nation Health Centres.

Physiotherapy is the primary health care profession that promotes wellness, mobility and independent function. Physiotherapists have advanced understanding of how the body moves, what keeps it from moving well and how to restore mobility. Physiotherapists manage and prevent many physical problems caused by illness, disability and disease, sport and work-related injuries, aging, and long periods of inactivity. Physiotherapists are skilled in the assessment and hands-on management of a broad range of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems.

Occupational therapy is a health profession that promotes health and well-being across the lifespan to enable clients to maximize their participation in meaningful activities (occupations).
