1. What is the Bereavement Fund? Answer: The Bereavement Fund is a financial assistance program established by the Mississauga First Nation to help cover funeral and burial expenses for the families of deceased band members. 2. Who is eligible for the Bereavement Fund? Answer: The fund is available to the families of registered Mississauga First Nation band members. Eligibility extends to immediate and, in the absence of immediate family, secondary and extended family members who are also band members. 3. What types of expenses does the fund cover? Answer: The fund covers various funeral-related expenses, including travel costs for family members, tombstone purchase, ceremonial materials, honorariums for special guests, utensils and cutlery for wakes, and obituary notices. 4. How much financial assistance can be received from the fund? Answer: Eligible families can receive a subsidy up to $2,000 per funeral, contingent upon the criteria outlined in the application and budget form. 5. How do I apply for the Bereavement Fund? Answer: Families must select a Family Representative to submit a completed budget form to the Mississauga First Nation administration. All relevant details and forms are available on our website. 6. Is the fund available for funerals conducted off the Reserve? Answer: Yes, the fund is available regardless of where the funeral is conducted. It is open to all band members, irrespective of their place of residence. 7. What is required for fund disbursement? Answer: Upon approval, 80% of the funds are released after signing an agreement. The remaining 20% is disbursed after verifying that the funds were used for funeral expenses. 8. What if I disagree with the fund decision? Answer: If you are unsatisfied with the decision regarding the fund, you may request a review, first with the band representative and then, if needed, with the Chief and Council. Their decision is final. 9. Are receipts required for expenses? Answer: Yes, receipts and invoices are required to ensure accountability and proper use of the fund. This documentation is also necessary for the final 20% disbursement. 10. Can the fund be used for non-band members? Answer: No, the Bereavement Fund is exclusively for registered Mississauga First Nation band members and does not extend to non-band members. |
