TOBACCO QUOTA
The Mississauga First Nation recognizes the cultural significance of tobacco and implements a thoughtful tobacco quota system. This system balances traditional use with sustainable practices, ensuring community health and environmental integrity. Members are encouraged to adhere to these guidelines, which reflect our commitment to respecting and preserving our ancestral heritage in a responsible manner.
allocation system
The allocation system is designed to ensure a sufficient supply of allocation cigarettes for adult band members on the reserve for personal consumption. This system considers several key factors:
Authorized wholesalers
Before April 1st of each allocation year, every approved retailer on the reserve receives notification about their specific tobacco allotment. These retailers then choose a wholesaler, to supply their allocation of cigarettes. The ministry informs the selected wholesaler about the quantity of allocation cigarettes they can sell to the respective on-reserve retailer. It is required that the supplier delivers these allocation cigarettes directly to the retailer's store located within the reserve. authorized retailers
Selling Cigarettes: Retailers on the reserve, are obligated to sell these cigarettes exclusively to First Nations individuals. These individuals are required to purchase allocation cigarettes only on the reserve and for their personal use. Selling allocation cigarettes to individuals who are not First Nations is prohibited by law. Possession of Allocation Cigarettes: Retailers on the reserve who are approved to purchase allocation cigarettes must adhere to their authorized quota. They are not allowed to possess more allocation cigarettes than what is permitted. Retailers without authorization are prohibited from possessing any allocation cigarettes. applying for a tobacco quota
