Mississauga Women's Shelter will provide a safe home for all women and their children, in any crisis situation; will educate families on the issues and impacts of the cycle of violence; and will promote healthy lifestyle

Vision
All families will live a safe, healthy and non-violent lifestyle.
Emergency shelter service
Mississauga Women’s Shelter offers a 10 bed emergency shelter service. The shelter is located in Mississauga First Nation, but the service is offered to any women and her children within the Algoma District. Emergency transportation can be arranged for women and their children who need to come to the shelter. In addition to safe, confidential accommodation, we also provide food and basic necessities, laundry facilities, private bedrooms, children’s play areas, and some storage area. Public education on the issues and impacts of violence against women and children
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING & SUPPORT SERVICe
The Transitional Housing & Support Worker provides assistance with:
  • Locating and maintaining safe housing
  • Safety planning
  • Information about rights
  • Referrals
  • Advocacy
  • Accompaniment to appointments
  • Ongoing emotional support
CRISIS TELEPHONE SERVICE 24 HOUR TOLL-FREE SUPPORT LINE
This toll free support line is available anywhere in the 705 area code. You may remain anonymous if you choose. The staff at Mississauga Women’s Shelter provides emotional support, information and referrals to any woman who calls in. The toll free number is (800) 461-2232.
Who can use this service?
  • This service is available to any woman 16 years of age and over, including her children, who:
  • Fears for her safety or the safety of her children
  • Has been physically, emotionally, sexually, financially or psychologically abused
  • Is in a housing crisis
  • Is a survivor of sexual assault or abuse
  • Finds herself in need of emergency shelter
  • Needs information, support or referrals

What is abuse?

The ongoing and continuous use of various tactics and behaviours which have as their goal, the gaining and maintaining of power and control by one person over another. Woman abuse can take many forms. The following are some examples:
Verbal
  • Insulting you
  • Swearing, put-downs, degrading language
  • Calling you names, calling you stupid, crazy or irrational
  • Accusing you of cheating
  • Attacking your self-esteem in other ways
physical
  • Includes punching, kicking, shoving, or dragging you
  • Slapping or biting you, pulling your hair, burning you
  • Using a weapon to hurt or threaten you
psychological & emotional
  • Threatening and controlling behavior
  • Threatening to take the children away
  • Threatening to put you in an institution
  • Threatening to commit suicide
  • Threatening to kill you
  • Following you and harassing you
  • Controlling your time, what you do, how you dress, how you wear your hair
  • Putting limits on who you can talk to on the phone or Internet and for how long
  • Keeping you away from friends and relatives - isolating you
  • Denying sex, affection or personal care
sexual
  • Touching or acting sexual in any way that you don’t want
  • Forcing or pressuring you into sexual acts
  • Forcing you to be a prostitute
  • Not letting you have information or education about sexuality
  • Forcing you to get pregnant, have an abortion, or have an operation so that you can’t have children
  • Infecting you with HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases
spiritual
  • Putting you down or attacking your spiritual beliefs
  • Not allowing you to attend the church, synagogue, or temple of your choice
neglect & isolation
  • Not letting you see a doctor or a dentist
  • Taking away hearing aids or a guide dog
  • Locking you in the house without a phone
  • Not allowing you to see friends or family members
  • Not letting you work outside of the home
  • Financial abuse or exploitation
  • Controlling where you spend your money, where you work and what property you buy
  • Spending all family income, including your money and savings
  • Using credit cards without your permission; destroying your credit rating
  • Forcing you to turn over your benefit payments to him or her

Help by recognizing and being aware of the signs of violence in our community and reporting it to the proper authorities.

We will always accept furniture, lightly used clothing, or any other household items or appliances. Financial contributions are also greatly appreciated by the shelter and its clients.
